Early detection, through regular and complete eye exams, is the key to protecting your vision from damage caused by glaucoma. A complete eye exam includes various tests to accurately diagnose glaucoma. Dr. Nason’s thorough glaucoma diagnostic process includes various testing, including Visual Field Test, HRT, and Pachymetry. It is important to have your eyes examined regularly even if you do not possess early symptoms of glaucoma.
At our West Palm Beach and Wellington practices, we use three main criteria used to diagnose and monitor glaucoma, pressure inside the eye, peripheral vision tests, and optic nerve examinations. Our experienced ophthalmologists use the optic nerve examination, the most critical element in diagnosing and monitoring glaucoma.
The Heidelberg Retinal Tomograph (HRT), now available at Michael S. Nason, O.D., P.A. and We’re All About Eyes, is a machine used for the assessment of the optic nerve and is very helpful in the diagnosis and monitoring of glaucoma. The HRT creates a three-dimensional map on the inner surface of the eye using a scanning laser and detects fine structural changes to the nerve fiber and optic nerve that occur due to glaucoma long before the patient notices the damage or change in vision.

HRT testing is valuable for two reasons. Your initial HRT test calculates your risk of glaucoma, by comparing the results with thousands of others from large database. This data is race specific and this analysis is very important as different ethnicities have different risks for developing glaucoma. Once a patient is diagnosed with glaucoma, treatment is simply a matter of prescribing eye drops taken daily. The HRT instrument can also be used to follow patients once on eye drops, by monitoring any further loss from occurring.
To prevent vision loss with necessary treatment, the HRT provides the patient with earlier diagnosis and sensitive disease monitoring. The significant advantage and information provided by the HRT allows us to help preserve your vision in ways that were previously not available.
The HRT is performed at our West Palm Beach, FL optometrist and is very easy, completely painless, and usually performed on an annual basis. The eye pressure readings and visual field testing may be covered by your health plan. If you are interested in a glaucoma assessment and HRT test, please let us know when setting up your next appointment.
